Smile with dental crowns

  • Precision – Our In-House lab offers custom, precise work in dramatically less time than other practices.
  • Natural Appearance – Our dental crowns will have the right color to enhance and blend in with your natural smile and presentation.
  • Longevity – It is not uncommon for our dental crowns to last 30 years while the industry average is often 10 years.

“’Hats off’ Doctor Marlin for the outstanding work done on my 12 crowns and implants 28 years ago. I moved from the area 25 years ago. Today my current dentist praised your work as he was evaluating my mouth after viewing my panoramic x-ray this morning. All 12 crowns are completely sound and do not need restored or replaced!”

When a tooth can no longer be repaired with a filling or an inlay, it needs to be restored with a dental crown or cap. The visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line will be covered. This is a precision restoration for restoring the tooth to an ideal form. Frequently, the tooth, itself, needs to be rebuilt before the new crown can be placed over it.

Before dental crowns

Before:

This patient presents with crowns on her two front teeth that do not match to each other or to her natural teeth. In addition, the adjacent front teeth were grey with the left one protruding. As a result, her crowns do not blend with the natural teeth and do not look real.

Dental crowns top

After:

To create a new look, we placed four crowns that have the right color, shape and translucency (crystalline, transparent effect) that enhance her smile line.

Broken tooth

Before:

This patient presented with the porcelain broken off of her lower first molar.

Dental crowns middle

After:

To correct the problem, new crowns were placed on her upper and lower first molars. With the proper form, bite, look and feel, the teeth appear natural.

When a crown is designed incorrectly, not only does it look unsightly, but it does not function properly. Incorrect design can irritate and damage the gum tissue, as well as the surrounding bone. Ultimately, the porcelain will fracture.

The Most Important Part of the Crown is the Part that You Never See: the Inside of the Crown

Teeth x-ray with old crown fitted poorly

Before:

An X-ray of the patients lower molar shows that her existing dental crown was not fabricated to fit tightly against the tooth. This results in an open margin, where bacteria can lead to tooth decay.

Dental crowns x-ray

After:

Her new lower crown was recontoured to fit tightly to the tooth and blend with the gum tissue.

Crowns That Do Not Fit Properly Will Decay

This patient presented with ill-fitting crowns that were placed only one year prior to her first visit with us. Now they have extensive decay. (see the dark shadow)

Dental Crown Procedure

Fabricating a crown requires at least two visits to our Washington DC dental office. Initially, we will remove decay, shape the tooth, take an impression, and fit it with a temporary acrylic crown.

On the subsequent visit, we will remove the temporary crown, and then custom fit and adjust the final crown. Finally, we will cement the crown into place.

What are the key benefits for dental crowns?

  • Offers support to broken or severely decayed teeth
  • Covers misshaped or severely discolored teeth
  • Replaces missing teeth, as an abutment for a bridge or an abutment for an implant.
  • Repairs smile and functional chewing problems
  • Looks completely natural.

Why Do Some Crowns Look Unnatural While Others Look Natural?

What are the capabilities of dental crowns?

Crown and bridge work is the most tried and proven solution for fixing major dental problems caused by accidents, diseases, or wear and tear. They are typically used to protect endodontically (root canal) treated teeth. Materials used in these repairs are either all porcelain type crowns or porcelain fused to gold crowns. The higher strength and greater precision of fit of the porcelain fused to gold crowns makes them the method of choice when treating the most serious dental problems. In instances where extensive damage has occurred resulting in the loss of teeth, where teeth have broken away through excessive wear, or where tooth damage caused by old fillings breaking down, crowns and/or bridges are traditionally used as a long-term solution.
